While it’s technically not on the beach, this barefoot luxury stay on Portugal’s dune-filled coast just over an hour from Lisbon (dubbed the “Hamptons of Portugal”) feels very much like a chic beach resort — only better. In my opinion its location — 17 acres surrounded by umbrella pines, cork trees and rice fields — affords you the best of both worlds. It feels secluded, but the resort’s own beach club at Praia do Carvalhal is only ten minutes away, and in just fifteen minutes you can get to Comporta Village.

Give it to me in a logline.

Relaxed luxury boho-chic resort and spa set amongst picturesque umbrella pine and cork trees.

How did we get here?

This is the third and final hotel review that I’m sharing from the Portugal road trip my husband and I took back in 2017. As a refresher, we stayed in seven places, and I ended up loving three (I also wrote about our stays in the Algarve countryside and Alentejo wine region if you want to check those out).

I’ve actually never been to the Hamptons, but I can see why Comporta is often compared to it. It’s got that bright and airy barefoot luxury aesthetic and it’s filled with miles of un-developed coastline (re: dunes). Plus, it’s long been a holiday destination for A-listers; Christian Louboutin has a home in the area and recently opened a stunning boutique hotel Vermelho in nearby Melides. When we went back in 2017 it was maybe still under-the-radar (at least with Americans), but it seems to have grown in popularity in recent years.
