7 Best Boutique Hotels in Mexico City
Design-led stays offering an immersive and intimate home base for exploring Mexico's vibrant capital.
I’ve been to Mexico many times, but have yet to go to Mexico City. Hoping to remedy that soon, and I’m even more convinced now that I’ve done a deep dive into the city’s boutique hotel scene.
The capital of Mexico, Ciudad de México or CDMX, is home to over 21 million residents, so for someone like me who has become more and more city-averse as the years go on, I prioritize intimate home-like spaces I can retreat to after a long day of exploring.
While these picks trend more guesthouse than luxury stay, what they lack in terms of traditional high-end hotel amenities they more than make up for with warm hospitality and inspired design. What more could you ask for as you restaurant, park and museum-hop your way through this incredible city?
Casa Tenue - Mexico City, Mexico
A warm palette of salmon and ochre help set a soothing, retreat-like tone at Casa Tenue, the intimate eight-room contemporary boutique guesthouse in Roma Norte reimagined by Vertebral Architecture. Interiors by Habitación 116 focus on materiality (think plaster walls, exposed wood ceiling joints and built-in cement window seats). For the ultimate indulgence, book the Penthouse Desierito and end the day with a soak under the stars in your private handmade copper bathtub.
Casa Polanco - Mexico City, Mexico
Housed in a Neo-Colonial style building from the 1940’s overlooking the picturesque Parque Lincoln, Casa Polanco feels like staying at a chic friend’s home. Set in CDMX’s upscale Polanca neighborhood, the boutique luxury hotel’s 19 rooms feel sophisticated and serene, while its common spaces — Veranda Restaurant and Library with their preserved architectural features (decorative moldings, plaster ceilings and intricate ironwork) — are where Casa Polanco really shines.
Maison Celeste - Mexico City, Mexico
Roma Norte’s Maison Celeste is both a boutique stay and concept house hosting everything from art and design pop-ups to wellness and gastronomic experiences. The restored mansion from the 1900’s is filled with historical details like crown moldings and stained glass, but its bold contemporary design and color help set it apart. It seems only fitting that each of its five rooms, all designed by ROKHA Estudio — Celeste, Musago, Pistache, Ocre and Alba — is awash in its very own hue.
