When I think of green it evokes feelings similar to what Fergie describes in her song Big Girls Don’t Cry. You know — clarity, peace, serenity. It’s hard to think of green without associating it with nature and the calming effect the physical world has on our emotions. And because of this, green tends to elicit similar feelings of balance and renewal: exactly what I love to feel during a great stay.
Whether its used sparingly as a common design thread or taking a more is more approach, these are six hotels that are getting it right.
César Lanzarote - Canary Islands, Spain
If ever there was a hotel for green lovers, César Lanzarote — one of Condé Nast Traveler’s 2024 Hot List recipients — would be it. Located in La Geria Natural Park on Lanzarote, one of Spain’s Canary Islands, this stunning boutique hotel designed by Virginia Nieto, and part of the Numa Signature hotel collection, is full of gorgeous tone-on-tone color. With 20 rooms and suites, swimming pool overlooking the sea, vineyards and panoramic views of the volcanic landscape as far as the eye can see, César Lanzarote is a sight to behold.
Solar de Vila Meã - Barcelos, Portugal
There’s just something about this suite at Solar de Vila Meã, a 19th century manor house turned boutique hotel in the Portuguese countryside, that immediately soothes me. The way the muted green accents play off its leafy mural without overpowering it, for one. Designed by Lisbon’s Joana Aranha Studio, you’ll find more of this calming nature-inspired palette throughout the 29-room hotel — from its custom marble check in table to mint green vintage piano. With its holistic spa and restaurant offering a fresh take on regional dishes there’s so much to love about this gorgeous character-filled hotel, less than an hour from Porto.
Villa Mabrouka - Tangier, Morocco
Surrounded by tranquil gardens, this stunning 1940’s modernist house and former retreat of fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé was transformed into Villa Mabrouka, an intimate 12-room hotel blending elements of both Moroccan and English design. British designer Jasper Conran utilizes green as a common design thread, but its use is reserved — ceiling and fretwork here, a lampshade or cabana stripe there — resulting in a wholly sophisticated stay meant to feel like a welcoming country house. Coupled with the villa’s pools, restaurants, rooftop cocktail bar and garden pavilion, Villa Mabrouka has all the makings of a delightful stay.
The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe - Rancho Santa Fe, USA
The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe, the storied property nestled in the gentle hills outside San Diego — around for more than a century — reopened its doors in 2023 after an inspired (and very green-heavy) reimagination. I stayed here years ago and had a truly relaxing time, but would love to go back and experience its more contemporary touches post-renovation. With designer Steve Hermann at the helm and final touches by Nina Chiappa Interiors, the 85-key retreat offers a sophisticated modern take on the country club aesthetic with a bit of Old Hollywood glamour mixed in for nostalgia.
Reschio Hotel - Umbria, Italy
Spanning more than 3700 acres in the verdant rolling hills of the Umbrian countryside lies the thoroughly captivating Reschio Hotel — once home to dilapidated buildings, now brilliantly infused with new life by the Bolza family. As for the green, The Palm Court is where you’ll find it — from the wrought-ironed columns and lush greenery down to its custom velvet settees, perfect for an afternoon tea. Whether you fill your days truffle hunting, befriending the estate’s Andalusian horses, indulging your artistic sensibilities with ceramics or taking a dip in their breathtaking pool, Reschio is an absolute dream — and one that I fully intend to realize.
Belden House & Mews — Litchfield, USA
I actually wrote about Belden House & Mews in the post The 2025 Hotel Openings That Should Be On Your Shortlist, so definitely check that out for the full scoop. But this bar is just too good so you know I had to include.
And a little bonus:
Just as I was about to hit publish I came across a hotel I remembered seeing before, but had completely slipped my mind: the Jaipur House in Mount Abu, India. I’ll link the Architectural Digest article here, but definitely check this one out. It’s designed by Marie-Anne Oudejans who also did Villa Palladio (which I wrote about in Ode to a Hotel Stripe). Anyway, if you’re a fan of Wes Anderson, Jaipur House will be right up your alley!
